Saab 9-X BioHybrid:
Boosting Efficiency in Compact Design and Performance

The Saab 9-X BioHybrid concept is a vivid vision of what a future compact car from Saab could look like. It is designed to reflect the priorities of youthful customers who seek progressive looks, responsible performance and high-tech communications, all in a sporty, fun-to-drive package.

Exploring design themes from Saab’s award-winning Aero X and earlier 9X concepts, the 9-X BioHybrid also demonstrates the potential for ultra-efficient power from a 200 hp (147 kW), 1.4-litre BioPower turbo engine backed by GM’s next-generation Hybrid system. Projected combined cycle CO2 emissions of just 105 g/km on E85 fuel are testimony to the promise of this package (see separate release for details).

Real Life Safety

The Saab 9-5 has already been awarded with highest possible rating, five stars, under USNCAP, the American equivalent to EuroNCAP. It has also been given the highest safety rating by IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) in the US. And in Sweden, a survey based on real road accidents, found the Saab 9-5 to be the only car with a performance more than 40% better than the average.

Class-leading economy

The 9-3 range features a powerful new four cylinder diesel engine with a unique two-stage turbocharging system, a world ‘first’ in the premium car segment, giving class-leading efficiency. It provides ‘the best of both worlds’: instant torque at low engine speeds via the low-inertia small turbo when the exhaust pressure is light – and strong ‘top end’ power at higher revolutions, when the bigger turbo is engaged.

Distinctive expression

The advanced all-wheel-drive system (Saab XWD – ‘cross wheel drive’) is exclusive to 9-3 AeroSport Sedan and SportCombi models. With innovative developments in wheel slip management by an electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential. The styling strategy brings together contemporary and classic Saab design themes in a progressive, modern expression of the brand’s distinctive character.

The Saab 9-3 range features bold assertive looks, reflecting a series of power train improvements that include the introduction of more powerful diesel, gasoline and BioPower (E85)engines. The distinctive frontal styling, inspired by Saab’s award-winning Aero X concept car, is designed to reinforce the range’s sporty appeal. It heralds the introduction of a ‘tri-fuel’ engine line-up that offers class-leading efficiency.
